INKED IMAGINATION
Derek gripped the steering wheel tightly as he drove down the freshly plowed mountain road. His jaw ached from clenching it the entire way. The luxury rental car handled the snow well, but nothing could cool the rage burning in his chest. He had expected to find Elara broken. Desperate. Maybe even crying and ready to admit she could not survive without him. Instead she had looked radiant, confident, and wrapped in the arms of some brooding mountain man who looked at her like she hung the damn stars.
โWho the hell does she think she is?โ he muttered to himself, slamming his hand against the wheel.
He had wanted her humbled. Crawling back to the city, begging for his help to fix the reputation he had deliberately destroyed. He had spread those rumors not just out of spite, but because her success had started making him feel small. Elaraโs endless optimism, her ability to light up every room, her talent that kept getting noticed. It had bruised his ego badly. He was supposed to be the one in control, the one she needed. Instead she had moved on so fast it made him sick.
โMountain man,โ he scoffed bitterly. โThat relationship will never last. She will come running back when reality hits. They always do.โ
Derekโs pride refused to accept what he had seen. The way she leaned into that man. The protective arm around her waist. The clear happiness in her eyes. It fueled a dark determination inside him. He was not done with Elara Voss. Not by a long shot. He would find a way to remind her exactly who she belonged to.
Back at Pine Ridge Resort, the Caldwells had finally departed after lunch with glowing praise and firm promises to invest. The moment their SUV disappeared down the road, the heavy front door closed and Rowan turned to Elara. The tension he had carried all weekend melted away as he took her hand.
โCome with me,โ he said softly.
He led her into the main lounge where the large stone fireplace crackled with fresh logs. The room felt warm and intimate now that they had it all to themselves. Rowan pulled her down onto the oversized couch and drew her close so their thighs pressed together.
โI need to tell you something,โ he began, his voice low and serious. โThis stopped being fake for me the night of the blizzard. Maybe even before that. Every touch, every conversation, every smile you gave me chipped away at the walls I built around myself for years.โ
Elara turned toward him fully, her heart beating faster. โFor me too,โ she admitted, her voice soft but steady. โI was scared to say it out loud. After Derek, I doubted everything about myself. But being here with you has changed that. You make me feel safe. Wanted. Like I can finally be myself again without worrying I am too much.โ
Rowanโs hand slid to the back of her neck, gently pulling her closer until their foreheads touched. They breathed each other in for a long moment, the fire warming their skin and casting golden light across their faces.
โI do not want this to end when your three weeks are up,โ he said roughly. โI want to build something real here. With you. A future. A home. If you will have me.โ
Emotion swelled in Elaraโs chest. Instead of answering with words, she closed the distance and kissed him. The kiss started deep and full of everything they had held back for days. Rowan groaned against her mouth and pulled her onto his lap so she straddled him. Her knees sank into the cushions on either side of his strong thighs.
His hands immediately found her waist, gripping firmly as he kissed her harder. Their tongues met in slow, sensual strokes that made heat pool low in her belly. Elara threaded her fingers through his thick hair and tugged lightly, earning a deep, appreciative sound from his throat. The fire between them ignited fast.
Rowanโs palms slipped under the hem of her sweater, caressing the bare skin of her back with warm, slightly rough hands. He pushed the sweater higher, exposing her stomach and ribs. When his thumbs brushed the undersides of her breasts through her bra, she gasped and rocked her hips against him instinctively.
โYou feel perfect,โ he murmured against her lips before claiming her mouth again, deeper and more demanding.
Elara tugged at his shirt. He helped her pull it over his head, revealing the hard planes of his chest and shoulders. She ran her hands over his warm skin, exploring the muscles that flexed under her touch. Rowan leaned forward and kissed down her neck, sucking gently at her pulse point while one hand slid higher to cup her breast fully. His thumb stroked over the lace until she arched into him with a soft moan.
They moved together on the couch in a slow, heated rhythm. Her hips rolled against his, feeling the unmistakable hardness of his desire pressing through their clothes. Rowan gripped her hips, guiding her movements while his mouth continued its delicious exploration of her neck and collarbone. Every grind, every touch, every shared breath made the fire inside her burn hotter.
He pushed her sweater all the way up and off. For a moment he simply looked at her, eyes dark with open want. Then he leaned in and kissed the swell of her breasts above her bra, his tongue tracing warm, teasing paths across her skin. Elara held his head to her, breathing fast, lost in the sensation of his mouth and hands.
His hands grew bolder, sliding down to grip her backside and pull her even tighter against him. The friction was exquisite. They rocked together, mouths fused, hands exploring every inch they could reach. Fingers slipped under waistbands to tease sensitive skin. Rowanโs hand ventured lower, stroking her through her jeans until she trembled with need.
They stayed like that for a long time, building the pleasure slowly and intensely. Clothes stayed mostly on, but the touches became increasingly daring. Whispers of need and affection filled the space between heated kisses.
โI am falling for you, Elara,โ Rowan said when they finally slowed, his voice thick with emotion. โI think I started falling the first day you smiled at me on that porch despite how cold I was.โ
She cupped his face, her thumbs brushing his cheeks tenderly. โI already fell,โ she whispered back. โHarder than I thought possible.โ
They spent the rest of the evening wrapped tightly in each other by the fire. The flames burned lower as they talked about their dreams for the resort, for themselves, and for the future they might build together. Hands continued to wander lazily, stroking backs, tracing collarbones, and slipping under clothes to tease and comfort. Every touch carried deep affection and the promise of more.
As the fire settled into glowing embers, Rowan held her close against his chest. Elara listened to the steady beat of his heart and smiled. For the first time in a long time, she felt completely safe, completely wanted, and completely hopeful about tomorrow.
Outside, miles down the mountain, Derek sat in his car at a roadside pullout, staring at his phone. He had already started drafting messages to old contacts, planting new seeds of doubt about Elara. His bruised ego refused to let her go so easily. He would not rest until he saw her come crawling back.
But at Pine Ridge, wrapped in Rowanโs strong arms, Elara had already moved on to something far better.
