XV: The ‘ingenious’ plan

โฑ๏ธ Est. reading time: 22 mins  |  ๐Ÿ“ 4,211 words

โ€œTell me Iโ€™m a genius,โ€ Easineya said the moment Nasilele, whom she had called over, shut the office door behind her.

โ€œYouโ€™re a genius? Why?โ€

โ€œI think I just figured out how youโ€™re going to get Lemba back.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m all ears.โ€

โ€œGet pregnant.โ€

Nasilele blinked, her mouth falling open. โ€œBrilliant planโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t sound enthusiastic. I thought youโ€™d jump at the idea.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been over two months since we broke up โ€” and another three before that since he touched me,โ€ she said. โ€œI donโ€™t see how thatโ€™s great.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because you didnโ€™t let me finish,โ€ Easineya said, sliding open a drawer and placing two small medical vials on the desk.

Nasilele gasped. The implications settled over her like a cold fog.

โ€œIโ€™m a genius, right?โ€ Easineya asked again.

โ€œEasiโ€ฆ heโ€™s your brother. We canโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œDo you want him back or not?โ€ Easineya cut in, sharp.

โ€œOf course I do,โ€ Nasilele admitted, her voice trembling.

โ€œThen itโ€™s settled,โ€ Easineya said, brushing aside her hesitation. โ€œOur goal is simple: you and Lemba. Together. Forever.โ€

She tucked the vials into her bag.

โ€œNow, how about lunch? Iโ€™m starving.โ€

TELI’S GARDEN

Thugs ran amok, smashing flowerpots against the concrete and tearing through Teliweโ€™s carefully tended plants. Sticks and metal rods shattered the larger shrubs. Roots were ripped from soil that had taken months to cultivate.

Her workers huddled in corners, nursing wounds, powerless against the swarm.

Teliwe stood still.

There was nothing she could do.

She tore the sleeves from her shirt and pressed the fabric to the deep gash on one workerโ€™s forehead, steadying him as he trembled.

In less than twenty minutes, the once-prosperous garden lay in ruins.

Only the bench remained intact.

Tears burned her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

Later, Chonta Chona and Edina stepped carefully over shards of clay and broken stems.

โ€œTeli, are you okay? What happened?โ€ Chonta asked, sitting beside her.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. They justโ€ฆ came,โ€ Teliwe said quietly.

Edinaโ€™s voice shook with fury. โ€œThis has Nsemiwe written all over it. You must call the police.โ€

โ€œWith what evidence?โ€ Teli sighed, running a hand through her afro. โ€œTheyโ€™ll ask questions, write a report, and file it away.โ€

โ€œAt least theyโ€™ll investigate,โ€ Chonta insisted, pulling out her phone.

Teli nodded, though she knew better.

This wasnโ€™t random.

It was a warning.

ZIMBA RESIDENCEย

Two days later, Easineya opened the door.

โ€œHi. Teli, right?โ€

โ€œYes. Iโ€™m here to see Mrs. Zimba.โ€

โ€œOh, you just missed her. But she was expecting you. Come in.โ€

Teli chose to wait in the garden.

Inside, Nasilele fidgeted.

โ€œWho was that?โ€

โ€œThe landscaper,โ€ Easineya replied lightly. โ€œReady?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure. What if something goes wrong?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not going to kill him. Relax,โ€ Easineya said with a small laugh. โ€œYour timing is perfect. This is our one chance.โ€

Timing was everything. They wouldnโ€™t get to make this mistake twice.

Nasilele inhaled sharply.

LEMBA’S STUDY

โ€œHey,โ€ Nasilele said softly, stepping inside.

Lemba looked up from his laptop. โ€œNasi?โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t go into the office today?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

Silence stretched between them.

โ€œYou canโ€™t even hide your displeasure when you see me anymore,โ€ she said.

โ€œNasilele,โ€ he sighed. โ€œYouโ€™re a good woman. I spent most of my life with you. But this desperation-โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not desperation,โ€ she interrupted. โ€œItโ€™s love.โ€

The door opened.

Easineya walked in carrying a tray.

โ€œHey, you two. Back together already?โ€

Lemba shot her a sharp look.

โ€œRelax. It was a joke,โ€ she said lightly. โ€œHere. I made your favorite punch.โ€

He took the glass, muttered a thanks, shut his laptop, and walked out of the room.

The door clicked closed.

Easineya turned to Nasilele with a grin. โ€œIโ€™d suggest you start undressing.โ€

โ€œVery funny,โ€ Nasilele said dryly, moving to the window instead.

She looked out over the garden.

โ€œThe landscaping is beautiful. Your mother has exquisite taste.โ€

โ€œShe does,โ€ Easineya replied, folding her arms. โ€œShe found this gardener whoโ€™s apparently a miracle worker. My parents canโ€™t stop talking about her. Every other sentence is her name.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ve taken quite a liking to her. At this rate, they might adopt her.โ€

She laughed softly.

Nasileleโ€™s smile faded.

Her gaze locked on something outside.

The color drained from her face.

The glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.

Easineya stiffened. โ€œNasi? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œIt canโ€™t be,โ€ she whispered, stepping back as if sheโ€™d seen a ghost.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s her.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€

Nasilele turned slowly, panic in her eyes. โ€œThatโ€™s Teli. Your brotherโ€™s Teli.โ€

Easineya went still.

โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d recognize her anywhere.โ€

Her breathing quickened.

โ€œYou canโ€™t let them meet. He canโ€™t know sheโ€™s here. If he sees herโ€”โ€

She didnโ€™t finish.

She didnโ€™t need to.

Outside, unaware of the storm brewing inside, Teli moved calmly through the garden.

Inside, everything shifted.

ZIMBA’S GARDENย

Easineya walked toward the bench, her expression composed.

Teli looked up from her notebook.

โ€œTeli.โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid my mother wonโ€™t be able to see you today,โ€ Easineya said smoothly. โ€œSomething came up.โ€

โ€œOh. She was expecting me.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Easineya replied evenly. โ€œPlans change.โ€

Her eyes moved over Teli slowly, assessing.

โ€œWeโ€™ll call you when itโ€™s convenient. No need to linger.โ€

The words were polite.

The meaning wasnโ€™t.

โ€œIs everything alright?โ€ Teli asked.

โ€œThat depends,โ€ Easineya said lightly. โ€œItโ€™s usually better when the past stays where it belongs.โ€

Teli didnโ€™t fully understand but she knew sheโ€™d just been warned.

โ€œIf thereโ€™s an issue with my workโ€”โ€

โ€œThere isnโ€™t,โ€ Easineya cut in, her smile thin. โ€œYour work isโ€ฆ impressive.โ€

A pause.

โ€œItโ€™s just important that certain boundaries remain clear.โ€

Silence hung between them.

โ€œIโ€™ll come back another time,โ€ Teli said.

โ€œYes,โ€ Easineya replied. โ€œYou should.โ€

She watched Teli leave.

Almost.

She had almost walked into that house.

Not again.

Easineya waited until the gate closed.

One crisis contained.

LEMBA’S BEDROOMย

Upstairs, the drink had begun to take effect.

Heat crept under Lembaโ€™s skin. His thoughts blurred at the edges.

When the door opened and Nasilele stepped inside, slowly unbuttoning her trench dress, restraint gave way to impulse.

He pulled her toward him.

She responded without hesitation.

Within minutes, they were tangled in sheets, urgency replacing reason.

Downstairs, Easineya stood near the staircase, listening.

She smiled faintly.

The hardest part was over.

It was an intense afternoon for Nasilele and Lemba.

For Lemba, it had been instinct- his body reacting to something he couldn’t fully control, heat clouding reason, urgency overriding thought.

For Nasilele, it had been something else entirely.

She gave herself to the moment completely; arching, clinging, moving against him as though it might be the last time she would ever feel him this close. Every breath, every sound, every shift of her hips carried months of longing and the quiet fear of losing him.

When the haze finally burned out of him and the restless heat faded, Lemba collapsed back against the sheets, exhausted. The artificial fire that had driven him was gone.

Nasilele remained still beside him.

She hadnโ€™t truly felt him the way she used to-not the tenderness, not the slow familiarity of his hands exploring her like home. What sheโ€™d received had been urgent.

Consuming.

But strangely distant.

A small flicker of disappointment stirred inside her.

She had imagined something softer. Something that lasted.

Still, as she lay there with her head resting lightly against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, she pushed the doubt aside.

This would be the first of many nights, she told herself.

A beginning.

Not an ending.

Even as his arm remained limp at his side-not wrapped around her ;she allowed herself to believe she had just reclaimed her future.

HOURS LATER

Night had fallen, the world prepared to put to rest another day but chaos reigned in the Zimba residence.

Lembaโ€™s chest heaved as he glared at Nacilele, kneeling on the bed, completely exposed. He gripped the sheet around his waist like a lifeline.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare come closer!โ€ he growled.

โ€œLemba, why are you being like this?โ€ she asked, her voice trembling.

โ€œBeing like this? Being like this? Are you insane? You drugged me and forced yourself on me!โ€

โ€œWe made love,โ€ she said softly. โ€œWe made sweet loveโ€ฆ like before.โ€

โ€œGod, Nancyโ€ฆ What is wrong with you?โ€

โ€œI love you, Lembaโ€ฆโ€

He stared at her in disbelief. โ€œAre you serious?โ€

She got off the bed, strutting toward him, trying to touch him. He turned his head, refusing to meet her naked body, and stepped back.

โ€œPlease, donโ€™t be like this. Donโ€™t ruin the beautiful memory we shared,โ€ she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes.

โ€œWhat you didโ€ฆ itโ€™s called rape. If I had done this to you, the police would be at my door. What made you think this was okay?โ€

โ€œI just wanted to remind you how good we are together. And it worked. You loved it-you showed me you still love me too.โ€

Lemba pinched the bridge of his nose, closing his eyes, forcing himself to take steadying breaths.

โ€œGet dressed. And get the hell out of my room,โ€ he said, his voice tight but controlled.

โ€œBabeโ€ฆโ€ she murmured, taking a step toward him.

โ€œNow!โ€ he bellowed, startling her. She stumbled back.

โ€œWhy are you doing this to me?โ€ she sobbed, tears rolling down her flawless dark cheeks. โ€œYou still love meโ€ฆyou didn’t resist meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou manipulated the situation,โ€™โ€™ he bit out. โ€œThat is not love. I havenโ€™t looked at you like a woman since we broke up.โ€

She sprang up, raising her hand to slap him. He blocked her, roughly pushing her back. Her legs hit the bed, and she fell hard, glaring at him.

โ€œWhose idea was this? Easi?โ€ he demanded, his anger barely contained.

She shook her head fiercely. โ€œEasi had nothing to do with this. I swear!โ€

He chuckled bitterly at her attempt to protect her friend. They were alike in ways she didnโ€™t realize.

โ€œGet out,โ€ he said, voice final.

โ€œLembaโ€ฆโ€ her tears threatened to break through again.

He grabbed her, shoving her out of his room, sheets flying, then shut and locked the door behind her. He paced the room, each step a measure of fury, imagining who he might throttle if given the chance.

When he had calmed enough to think, he called the company’s interior decor team .

Within the hour, they had stripped the room bare and replaced everything-making sure nothing, not a single trace, reminded him of her presence.

THE NEXT MORNING

Lemba barely touched his food.

Across from him, Easineyaโ€™s eyes sparkled with mischief as she studied him, wondering just how much he knew.

โ€œItโ€™s a shame your Teli couldnโ€™t join us,โ€ Easi said to her mother, her tone as dry as the bread on her plate.

โ€œWhatโ€™s with you?โ€ Edina asked, raising an eyebrow.

โ€œIt looks like youโ€™re trying way too hard to set up my idiot brother with the gardener,โ€ she replied smoothly.

โ€œAnd whatโ€™s wrong with that?โ€ Edmond interjected. โ€œThe only problem isโ€ฆ heโ€™s in love with another Teli.โ€

โ€œThe standards of this family have really dropped,โ€ Easi said, leaning back, her voice laced with sarcasm. โ€œHe wants to bring in a hooker, and youโ€™re trying to pair him with a gardener.โ€

Lembaโ€™s eyes narrowed at her.

โ€œEasi!โ€ Edina cautioned sharply.

โ€œWe trust your brotherโ€™s judgment,โ€ Edmond said calmly.

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t,โ€ Easi said, a sharp laugh escaping her. โ€œOr you wouldnโ€™t be trying so damn hard to set him up with the gardener. At least the gardner is leagues above the hooker. Youโ€™re just too timid to admit your fears.โ€

โ€œSo,โ€ Edina said, ignoring her daughter, leaning forward, โ€œyou should know thereโ€™s a high possibility that Lembaโ€™s Teli and the gardener might be the same person.โ€

Lemba shot his mother a look, brows raised.

โ€œI meant to tell youโ€ฆ weโ€™ll talk later,โ€ Edina murmured, sidestepping.

โ€œAnd I imagine her side job is to be a hooker,โ€ Easi added, catching the flicker of hope in her brotherโ€™s eyes, her tone dripping with venomous delight.”‘Seems she’s not raking in ennough from turning the soil.”

โ€œEasi, enough,โ€ Edmond warned.

โ€œNo, Dad. Someone has to knock sense into him. We canโ€™t encourage this madness any longer, he needs to find a good woman to settle down withโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNaci and Iโ€ฆweโ€™re over,โ€ Lemba hissed, his jaw tight.

โ€œ Is that so?โ€ Easi said casually, a teasing edge in her voice. ”It didn’t seem like it when you fucked each other like a pair of wild rabbits in heat yesterday.”

”Easi, language !” Edmond admonished angrily.

Lembaโ€™s fingers clenched around his fork, his glare cutting through the table.

โ€œLemba?โ€ Edina asked worriedly, seeking clarification. If Teliwe the gardener was hisone night stand and he was having casual sex with Nacilile, it complicated everything.

โ€œKeep her and her crazy friend away from me,โ€ he said, rising abruptly, pushing back his chair. He left the room, leaving a stunned silence behind him.

”Oh how pitiful Naci is, dumped for some cheap hooker!” Easi shouted after him but he ignored her taunts.

”Now you are going over board,” Edina said, slaming her hands on the table.

Easi pullked back the chair roughly.”Nothing good will come out of him hooking up with that cheap floozy. You will remember my words someday.”

She threw her napkin on the table and stormed off to the dusasppoint of her parents.

”Easi!” Edina shouted afte her.

Edmond poured a glass of water for his fuming wife, gently patting her back.

๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ

Easineyaโ€™s phone rang just as she was about to get some shut eye after pulling an all nighter at the hospital.

She answered immediately.

โ€œNaci?โ€

All she heard at first was crying.

Not soft crying. The kind that comes from the stomach.

โ€œHe blocked me,โ€ Nacilile choked out. โ€œEverywhere. I canโ€™t reach him.โ€

Easineya sat up straighter. โ€œWhat do you mean everywhere?โ€

โ€œCalls. Messages. Everything. I tried from another number. He blocked that too.โ€

A fresh wave of sobbing.

โ€œOkay. Okay,โ€ Easi said quickly, her tone shifting. โ€œBreathe first. Donโ€™t panic.โ€

โ€œHe hates me,โ€ Nasi whispered. โ€œHe thinks Iโ€™m disgusting.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s angry,โ€ Easi corrected firmly. โ€œAnd heโ€™s dramatic when heโ€™s angry.โ€

โ€œHe said what I did was-โ€ Her voice broke. โ€œHe said it was rape.โ€

There was a sharp pause.

โ€œThatโ€™s ridiculous,โ€ Easineya snapped instantly. โ€œYou didnโ€™t attack him. You didnโ€™t force him.โ€

โ€œI just wanted him back,โ€ Nasi cried. โ€œI thought if he remembered how we were-โ€

โ€œAnd he did remember,โ€ Easi cut in. โ€œDonโ€™t let him twist this.โ€

Silence on the other end, but the crying didnโ€™t stop.

โ€œI canโ€™t lose him,โ€ Nasilele whispered. โ€œEasi, Iโ€™m not strong like you. I canโ€™t just move on. If he leaves me, thatโ€™s it for me. I swear I wonโ€™t survive it.โ€

โ€œStop talking like that,โ€ Easi said sharply, protective now. โ€œYou are not falling apart over one man.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not just one man,โ€ she sobbed. โ€œHeโ€™s my future. My whole life.โ€

Easi closed her eyes briefly.

โ€œ He erased me, Easi. Like I was nothing.โ€

That hit.

Easiโ€™s voice hardened.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t get to erase you.โ€

โ€œHelp me, Easi,โ€ Naci begged. โ€œPlease. I canโ€™t do this aloneโ€ฆif he leaves meโ€ฆโ€™โ€™

โ€œHe wonโ€™t,โ€ Easi said, with more confidence than she felt. โ€œHe has to take responsibility for you.โ€

โ€˜โ€™He hates meโ€ฆyou should have seen the way he looked at meโ€ฆโ€™

Easineya stood very still for a moment.

Then her expression changed.

Protective. Furious. Ready for war.

โ€˜โ€™Don’t worry, he will do right by you.โ€™โ€™

๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ

Lemba was in his study when the door flew open.

He didnโ€™t bother to look up.

โ€œGet out.โ€

Easineya didnโ€™t.

โ€œYou blocked Naci?โ€

โ€˜โ€™Since when do I report to you?โ€™โ€™

โ€œSheโ€™s a wreckโ€ฆshe’s falling apart,โ€ Easi shot back. โ€œCrying. Shaking. You blocked her on everything?โ€

โ€œHow is that my problem?โ€™โ€™

Easi walked forward and slammed shut the laptop.

He slowly looked up, his eyes cold. โ€œGet the fuck out .โ€

โ€œNot until you explain why youโ€™re treating her like sheโ€™s trash.โ€

โ€œOh I don’t know, maybe because she showed up at my house and drugged me.โ€

โ€œShe was desperate.โ€

โ€œShe violated me.โ€ He enunciated each word slowly, barely keeping his anger at bay.

Easi didnโ€™t flinch.

โ€œYouโ€™re exaggerating.โ€

His chair scraped loudly against the floor as he stood.

โ€œExaggerating?โ€ His voice was low now. Dangerous. โ€œShe took away my choice.โ€

โ€œShe wanted you back.โ€

โ€œShe didnโ€™t get to decide that for me.โ€

โ€œShe thought you still loved her!โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€

That landed.

But Easi recovered quickly.

โ€œYou did,โ€ she said. โ€œOr you wouldnโ€™t have responded.โ€

His jaw tightened.

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to twist this.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to destroy her over it,โ€ she fired back. โ€œShe hasnโ€™t slept. She thinks her life is over.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not my responsibility.โ€

โ€œIt became your responsibility the moment you touched her back.โ€

Silence.

His breathing changed.

โ€œYou think this is romantic?โ€ he asked quietly.

โ€œWhy are you acting like she assaulted you in an alley,โ€ Easi snapped. โ€œThis was messy, yes. Wrong, maybe. But not evil.โ€

His hands curled into fists.

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to decide what it felt like.โ€

โ€œAnd you donโ€™t get to pretend sheโ€™s some predator,โ€ she shot back. โ€œShe loves you.โ€

โ€œLove doesnโ€™t drug someone.โ€

That hit harder than she expected.

But she pushed through.

โ€œShe panicked. She made a mistake. And now youโ€™re punishing her like she committed murder.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m protecting myself.โ€

โ€œBy humiliating her?โ€

โ€œShe humiliated herself.โ€

Their parents appeared at the doorway, drawn by the raised voices.

โ€œWhat is going on?โ€ Edina asked.

Neither sibling looked at her.

โ€œShe blocked him because she was scared,โ€ Easi said, pointing at Lemba. โ€œAnd now heโ€™s cut her off like sheโ€™s disposable.โ€

โ€œI blocked her because I donโ€™t feel safe around her,โ€ Lemba said evenly.

That silenced the room.

Edmond frowned. โ€œUnsafe?โ€

Lemba didnโ€™t take his eyes off his sister.

โ€œShe drugged me.โ€

Edinaโ€™s hand flew to her mouth.

Easi scoffed. โ€œYouโ€™re making it soundโ€”โ€

โ€œI was dugged, lost my mind ,โ€ he continued. โ€œAnd she was already my bed. No doubt this was your daughter’s brilliant plan.โ€

The air shifted.

Edina looked between them in horror.

โ€œIs this true?โ€ she asked quietly.

Easi hesitated. Just a fraction.

โ€œI don’t know what you are talking about. Moreover, she didnโ€™t mean it like that.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I asked.โ€ Edina stated.

Silence.

Lembaโ€™s voice dropped.

โ€œShe crossed a line. And I will not be guilted into pretending she didnโ€™t.โ€

Easiโ€™s eyes burned.

โ€œShe is breaking down right now because of you.โ€

โ€œAnd I am done being manipulated by tears.โ€

That did it.

She stepped closer, almost shaking with anger.

โ€œIf she hurts herselfโ€”โ€

โ€œShe wonโ€™t,โ€ he cut in.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know that!โ€

โ€œAnd if she does, that is not on me.โ€

The words were ice.

Even Edmond stiffened at that.

Easi stared at her brother like she didnโ€™t recognize him.

โ€œYouโ€™ve changed,โ€ she said quietly.

He sneered. ” Why? Because i refuse to play your sick manipulative games?”

Silence swallowed the room.

Finally he moved past her, opening the door.

โ€œThis conversation is over.โ€

He walked out.

Easi stood there, shaking-not from fear.

But rage.

๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ

Lemba walked into the office lobby and stopped.

Nacilele stood near reception, eyes swollen, mascara smudged, fingers twisting around her handbag strap.

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

The moment Nacilile saw him, she stood too fast and nearly stumbled in her heels.

โ€œLemba.โ€

He turned, heading in another direction. She ran after him.

โ€œLemba, please. Just five minutes. Iโ€™m begging you.โ€

He stopped and turned to face her. His expression didnโ€™t change.

โ€œI blocked you for a reason,โ€ he said flatly

โ€œI know. I know. I deserve it. I was stupid. I was desperate. But donโ€™t shut me out like this. Donโ€™t erase me.

Employees were pretending not to stare.

โ€œYouโ€™re causing a scene,โ€ he said quietly.

โ€œI donโ€™t care!โ€ she cried. โ€œI canโ€™t live without you. I canโ€™t sleep. I canโ€™t breathe. Iโ€™ll die without you.

His jaw tightened.

โ€œSecurity.โ€

Her face went pale.

Two guards approached.

โ€œNo,no, please-Lemba, tell them to stop!โ€ She clung to his arm. โ€œI love you. I made a mistake. Iโ€™ll fix it. Iโ€™ll do anything.โ€

He removed her hand from his sleeve like it disgusted him.

โ€œDonโ€™t ever touch me again,” he hissed

The guards pulled her back. She struggled, heels scraping against the marble floor.

โ€œLemba! Please! Donโ€™t do this to me!โ€

โ€œRemove her,โ€ he ordered.

They dragged her toward the elevator. She was crying now, not caring who saw. Her hair fell into her face, her body weak, slightly unsteady, still not fully clear from whatever she had taken to calm herself.

The elevator doors slid open.

And he turned away.

She twisted to look at him one last time.

The doors closed.

๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ

Edmond had stepped out of a board meeting in time to witness the last of it.

When he walked into his sonโ€™s office, the sight stopped him at the door.

The place was a mess.

Everything had been swept off the desk. Papers littered the floor like fallen leaves.

A shattered glass lay near the wall, the water from it slowly spreading across the polished tiles.

A chair had been pushed back so violently it had toppled over.

Lemba stood near the window, his back turned, shoulders stiff.

For a moment Edmond simply watched him. He had rarely seen his son lose control like this.

Lemba had always been the composed one-the man who handled problems with cold precision.

But now the tension in his posture told another story.

โ€œWas that necessary?โ€ his father asked quietly.

Lemba didnโ€™t turn to acknowledge his presence.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s unstable.โ€

โ€˜โ€™I don’t see how that’s my problem.โ€™โ€™

โ€˜โ€™You two have a historyโ€ฆโ€™โ€™

โ€˜โ€™That did not give her the right to violate me,โ€ Lemba replied flatly.

Edmond nodded.โ€™โ€™ I just don’t want you to regret everything later.โ€™โ€™

โ€œThis is mercy.โ€

Edmond studied him.

โ€œYouโ€™re being very cold-heartedโ€ฆits not like you.โ€

Lemba finally turned, eyes cold.โ€ She deserves this and much more.โ€™โ€™

๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ•ธ

Downstairs, Nacilile stumbled out of the building, shaking.

Her head felt heavy. Her thoughts blurred. She hadnโ€™t slept. She hadnโ€™t eaten.

She had taken something to steady herself-something that clearly wasnโ€™t working.

She got into her car anyway.

Hands trembling, she dialled Easi but there was no reply.

Nacilile sat in the driverโ€™s seat for a long time before turning the key.

Her hands wouldnโ€™t stop shaking.

People walked past her car.

Normal.

Unbothered.

The world hadnโ€™t ended

But hers had.

She started the engine.

Her phone buzzed in her lap.

Easi.

She answered immediately.

โ€œHe threw me out,โ€ she said before Easi could speak. Her voice sounded far away.

โ€œIn front of everyone. Like I was nothing.โ€

โ€œWhere are you?โ€ Easi demanded.

โ€œIn the parking lot.โ€

โ€œGood. Stay there.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ She wiped her face with the back of her hand. โ€œI canโ€™t sit here like some pathetic ex he discarded.โ€

โ€œNaci, listen to me-”

โ€œI loved him,โ€ she said, her voice breaking. โ€œI gave him everything.โ€

โ€œYou still need to calm down.โ€

โ€œI am calm,โ€ she whispered.

She wasnโ€™t.

She pulled out of the parking lot.

โ€œNaci.โ€ Easiโ€™s tone sharpened. โ€œAre you driving?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œPull over.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œYou are not fine.โ€

Tears blurred her vision again. She blinked rapidly, trying to clear them.

Cars moved around her.

Horns. Traffic lights.

Her breathing was uneven.

โ€œI just need to get home,โ€ she said. โ€œI just need to lie down.โ€

A light ahead turned yellow.

She didnโ€™t slow down.

โ€œNaci,โ€ Easi said sharply, something in her voice changing. โ€œAnswer me properly. Are you okay to drive?โ€

โ€œI said Iโ€™m-โ€

A horn blasted from her left.

She turned her head too late.

A truck.

Too close.

Too fast.

Metal collided with a deafening crack.

The world spun.

Glass shattered.

Her scream tore through the phone.

Then crushing silence.

The line went dead.

Easineya stared at her screen.

โ€œNaci?โ€

Nothing.

She pulled the phone away slowly.

Then called back. The call went straight to voicemail.

Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.

She stood up so fast her chair fell back.

โ€œNaci.โ€

This time it wasnโ€™t anger in her voice.

It was fear.
